Madrid City Council will install new underground containers, for the first time, in the Centro district, as Borja Carabante, the delegate of the Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility Area, announced at the Government Meeting "this initiative is included in the contract for containerization, collection and transport of waste which was launched in November 2022".
Work on the installation of the new underground equipment will begin during the first half of March with the aim of being operational by the end of the month. A total of 90 CONTENUR underground containers will be installed for the collection of paper-cardboard, plastic-metal, and glass.
The implementation of this system is part of the Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy. In addition, the City Council has already completed the renovation of the 51 underground containers spread over 18 areas in the Barrio de Salamanca district.
CONTENUR underground containers
The underground container has been designed with a hinged lid and automatic silent closure. In addition, to make it easier to deposit the waste, the lid has been fitted with a front handle and a Braille inscription for the visually impaired. The height of the underground bin is 90 centimeters high, making it easy for anyone to access.
The elements of the new underground containers are prefabricated concrete blocks, safety platform, container body, reception box and lifting system. They are equipped with a hydraulic cushioning system that is configured to prevent entrapment and minimize noise when the waste is deposited. CONTENUR has designed a modular underground container model which has the main advantage of lower repair and maintenance costs, as it can be replaced piece by piece without the need to replace the entire assembly.
